We specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal gum diseases.

Our mouths are full of bacteria, mucus and other particles that constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on the teeth. Brushing and flossing does help to eliminate some of the plaque, however plaque that is not removed by brushing and flossing can harden and form tartar.

The longer plaque and tartar stays on the teeth, the more harmful they can become and eventually the bacteria associated with these can cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums commonly known as gingivitis.  Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, which is an inflammation around the tooth where the gums pull away forming pockets that can become infected. Bacteria and the body's natural response to the infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that holds teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed and the teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed.

To control gingivitis and periodontitis is to control the infection. Treatment starts at home with brushing and flossing and Dr. Heidari may even suggest behavioral changes like quitting smoking or drinking less soda. However, when infection of the gums has progressed beyond the point where brushing and flossing are not effective, then other procedures will be recommended.

The most common non-surgical procedure for removing the plaque is deep-cleaning technique called scaling and root planing.  Scaling means scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line.  Root planing eliminates the rough spots on the tooth root where the bacterial toxins can collect. For most people, this will be enough to achieve good dental health.

For those whose condition can't be treated with non-surgical scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be the only other option. Dr. Heidari will recommend a surgical procedure if he determines that the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatment.
